obama leading in four crucial swing states. now, the new polling was done after the release of mitt romney's secretly recorded remarks to a group of wealthy donors back in may. romney told them as you know that 47% of americans are dependent on government, see themselves as victims and will vote for president obama no matter what. he said it wasn't his job to worry about them. he says he didn't say it very elegantly but as you saw at the top, mr. romney doubled down today with cnn's jim acosta on that now debunked ad claiming that president obama is taking the work requirement out of welfare. in addition, as we said, there's new polling out tonight with a special focus on the economy. i talked about it earlier with chief national correspondent john king and chief political analyst gloria borger. so john, new polling out today from the "washington post" focuses on two of the most critical states in the election cycle, obviously ohio and florida. what do they show? >> they show bad news for governor romney heading into the big week of the first debate. ohio without a doubt a must-win

saying she was not doing this again. four years ago could michelle obama have pulled off ann's fire? >> i have a little bit of a soft spot for political wives. it's hard to watch someone white house who you're in love with be in a struggle that is a political campaign, so i feel her on that and i even like the fact that a political wife in this case is speaking her mind rather than being fully managed by the campaign at all times. think many of us are frustrated by how political wives sometimes get completely managed in campaigns. that said do i think michelle obama could have gotten away with these kinds of expressions of anger and irritation about how her husband was treated? no, i don't think so. i think we see clearly when michelle obama, before she was the first lady, did express even just her pride about it, that she was very much taken to task that and she was also considered maybe a liability going forward. doesn't certainly have the popularity factor that she has now back then. and the first lady, though, one thing she's done as first lady is championed for school nutrition as pa
